Gandhinagar: Prime Minister Narendrabhai Modi during his visit to Germany today gifted a Gujarat origin craft item to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The craft is very lesser known and it is from Surat in South Gujarat.
Sedali is a craft that is native to Surat in Gujarat through the Parsi community, who migrated to India from Iran. The craft bears close similarities to the Persian from of marquetry called ‘Khatam’.
It’s a highly skill technique that involves the fabrication of geometric patterns on wood. It is a wooden micro mosaic work, where tiny thin pieces of any kind of wood are cut with geometric precision. These shaped wood-cuts are fitted on the flat surface of natural wood. The fitting involves a specific method and only someone who has been involved in this art for a considerable amount of time can get the art of placement right. The elaborate designs add a charming aesthetic to the art pieces.
The Prime Minister has on previous occasions also gifted craft items from Gujarat to dignitaries of the world. He had gifted Akik made items from Bharuch on more than one occasion to visiting leaders. DeshGujarat
