25 farmers of Dhanera develop ‘Khet Talavdis’ to harvest rain water for irrigation

Banaskantha: Amidst the acute water crisis, 25 farmers of Dhanera taluka with help from the government have created water harvesting ponds (Khet Talavdi). The khet talavdi can hold enough water to irrigate about 20 bighas of land.

Despite the monsoon being in full swing in the state, Dhanera taluka is yet to witness sufficient rain-fall needed to initiate sowing activities. To resolve the problem of water for irrigation, 25 farmers have developed a khet talavdi on their farm lands that can accumulate 70 lakh liters of water.

Village after village of Dhanera taluka have started facing the water problem in the last 12 years. Owing to watertable dropping significantly, borewells have also begun to fail. In such a crisis situation, farmers of Dhanera taluka have come forward to harvest rain water after the government provided them with strong plastic and developed 25 ‘khet talavdis’.

Farmers from villages such as Moti Dungdol, Nani Dungdol, Shiya, Ananpurgadh of Dhanera taluka have taken the benefit of the government scheme and developed ‘khet talavdis’ to harvest sufficient rainwater for irrigating the fields for at least 2 seasons.
