Water Resouces dept objects to deep sea discharge of Ahmedabad’s trade effluent
January 21, 2023
Sabarmati: Narmada, water resources, water supply and Kalpsar department, has opposed the deep sea discharge of Ahmedabad’s trade effluent.
According to Amicus curiae Hemang Shah, the possibility of using the MEGA pipeline for transferring wastewater from Ashima Ltd and other textile units was discussed at a stakeholder meeting.
The water supply department opposes the disposal of Ahmedabad’s industrial waste into the Gulf of Khambhat because it is planning to build the largest artificial freshwater reservoir ‘Kalpsar’ in the world. That reservoir will supply water to Saurashtra and Central Gujarat.
The meeting was held to address the issue after Ashima Ltd., which had been shut down because the HCs forbade the release of treated effluent into the sewer network, asked permission to connect to the MEGA pipeline to discharge its treated effluent.
A further hearing will be held next month. DeshGujarat
