US bases firm likely to invest $10 billion in Semiconductor project in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: The semiconductor industry in Gujarat is all set to get another push as US-based Micron Technology is planning to invest ₹75000 crore ($10 billion) in the state. Last year, Vedanta Ltd and Taiwan’s Foxconn signed an agreement with the Gujarat government for their $20 Billion Semiconductor project.

According to a report in the Times of India, a US-based data storage device manufacturer will soon announce setting up a manufacturing facility for data storage devices along with assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP), in Gujarat.

The team visited Gujarat six months ago, and at least a 3 lakh sq metre land area between Amdvad and Sanand is being finalised by the company for the project. Previously, it had planned to choose Tamil Nadu but now, if sources are to be believed the project is most likely coming to Gujarat.

As the first state to announce its Semiconductor Policy, Gujarat offers subsidies on land acquisition, capital investments, stamp duty reimbursements, fixed water tariffs, as well as electricity tariff subsidies over a period of ten years, which may be a major reason why Gujarat is receiving such large investments in the semiconductor industry.
