Centre’s nod to 20,000 MW offshore wind power project in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: The Central government has granted the in-principle approval for a 20,000-megawatt offshore wind power generation project on the Gujarat coastline, say reports.

An estimated Rs 16,000 crore will be invested in setting up offshore windmills, and an additional Rs 20,000 crore to Rs 24,000 crore will be invested in setting up onshore transmission infrastructure.

As per the reports, the state government will buy all the power generated under this renewable energy project.

To set up offshore wind power generation infrastructure off the Gujarat coast, the Union renewable energy ministry will invite bids, while the state and centre will collaborate in building the necessary infrastructure along the coastline.

As per a report by the Gujarat government, the state’s 1,600 km long coastline has the potential of generating 32GW to 35GW offshore wind power. The present wind power generation in the state stands at 9,860.6MW.

The state government has identified five zones along the coastline conducive to offshore wind power generation located along the Saurashtra, South Gujarat, and the Gulf of Khambhat coastlines. DeshGujarat
