Ahmedabad: Having unseasonal rains in summers and even winters is not a matter of surprise for Ahmedabad anymore recently, but the rainfall on Sunday evening today was not just a thunderstorm but a full-scale hailstorm. The citizens from various areas from Bopal, Satellite, Ambawadi, and Paldi in the West to Khadia in the East reported hailstorms with ice cubes falling from the sky heavily. The entire Sunday till around 6 pm in the evening was a normal sunny summer day. Then came clouds and they started roaring. Then came NowCast warning that the parts of Gujarat including Ahmedabad may witness a light thundershower with the wind in the evening, and then it started raining heavily.

The citizens were inquiring whether hailstorms of this size can damage the sunroofs of their cars or solar panels installed on the open terraces! Or whether it affects the Metro train operations! The citizens were clueless as the city normally doesn’t witness such a hailstorm. The focus of Cricket lovers from entire India and even abroad was the final match of Tata Indian Premier League 2023 which was scheduled to be played at Narendra Modi stadium in the Motera area of the city. The cricket pitches were covered as rainfall started in the stadium where the presence of the audience could be anywhere between 75,000 to 1 lakh. As we are writing this at 7.36 pm, the match has not started. Forget the match, even the toss has not been possible. The commentators claim that the match can take place even after 9 pm, but the rainfall needs to stop for that. Monday has been kept reserve for final match to take place if it can’t happen today.

As per the latest IMD bulletin, more unseasonal rains are predicted tomorrow (Monday) and on Tuesday in parts of Gujarat (excluding Ahmedabad).
