Jamnagar: In a video message, a Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha and Corporate Affairs Director of Reliance Industries, Parimal Nathwani, urged the stakeholders of Union and State Governments to address the issue of a train accident involving lions in the Gir Forest area of Gujarat.
Nathwani made this video appeal in the backdrop of the incident that occurred around 2 am last night when a group of four lions ventured on the railway track in Uchecha village of Amreli district and regrettably, one of the lions lost its life after being hit by a freight train, and another lion sustained serious injuries. The railway authorities have stated that the speed of the goods train at the time of the incident was around 50 kmph.
He highlighted the need for the government and railways to take necessary precautions in this corridor. However, after a recent cyclone, the protective net on the road and near the track appeared to be damaged. Nathwani emphasized the importance of monitoring goods trains passing by during the night and day.
Train accidents involving lions are concerning. Requesting stakeholders of the state and central government to take necessary steps to address this, especially regarding monitoring of trains’ speeds in & around Gir and bring permanent solution for lions’ safety.@PMOIndia… pic.twitter.com/0Q7DRGEp9x

He stated that requests have been made to the Prime Minister, Railway Minister, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and the Minister of Forest and Environment of Gujarat, Mulubhai Bera, who have responded to the matter. Despite efforts, monitoring the speed of the trains on the Pipavav track remains challenging, leading to unfortunate accidents involving valuable lions.
Nathwani highlighted the increasing movement of lions in city areas, with videos showing lions entering cities and even highways in Junagadh, Amreli, Pipavav, and Dhari. He appealed to Gujarat CM, PM Modi, and Minister Mulubhai Bera to find a permanent solution for the safety of lions in the region. DeshGujarat
