Amreli: Another Asiatic lion has been dead during its treatment, after being hit by a moving goods train in Amreli district three days ago. This takes the death toll of lions to two as one lion had already succumbed on the accident day.
The incident occurred on July 21 near Uchaiya village of Rajula taluka in Amreli, where an Asiatic lion was killed and another injured after being struck by the goods train. The railway route between Pipavav port and Rajula falls in the revenue area away from the Gir forest, which houses Asiatic lions
The injured lion was later moved to Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh for treatment, but unfortunately, it also succumbed to its injuries on Sunday, as confirmed by Aradhana Sahu, the chief conservator of forest, Junagadh Wildlife Circle.
Against the backdrop of this incident, a Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha, Parimal Nathwani, had made an appeal and urged the stakeholders of the Central and State Governments to address the issue of a train accident involving lions in the Gir Forest area of Gujarat.
Nathwani emphasized the need for the government and railways to take necessary precautions in this corridor. Despite efforts, monitoring the speed of the trains on the Pipavav track remains challenging, leading to unfortunate accidents involving valuable lions, he added.
Nathwani voices the need to monitor train speed for Lions’ safety, as another Gir Lion, hit by a moving train dies https://t.co/Nv3vcjeXdg pic.twitter.com/vYaaqPGJ6n
