Four undertrial inmates flee Borsad Sub-jail; Search operation underway

Anand: Four undertrial prisoners escaped from a sub-jail in Borsad early this morning. In response, authorities promptly launched an operation to apprehend them.

According to Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar, the incident occurred between 3:30 AM and 4:00 AM here in Borsad sub-jail, where four inmates who were under trial for charges including murder, rape, and violations of prohibition laws managed to escape. They accomplished this by cutting through the wooden section beneath the iron bar of the barrack gate using a saw and then leaping over a high boundary wall, he added.

Among the escapees, one faced murder charges, two were accused of rape under the POCSO (the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, and one was charged under the state’s Prohibition Act.

“We’ve established barricades at different locations and commenced a search operation to nab them. Despite briefly locating one of the escapees, he managed to evade capture by fleeing through farmland,” the Superintendent of Police (SP) explained.

It is also learned that one of the escaped prisoners, who had been charged under the Prohibition Act, had recently been granted bail by a court, so the reasons behind his decision to escape remain unclear.

It’s worth noting that this is not the first time such an incident has occurred at the Borsad sub-jail. In 2004, ten prisoners managed to escape from the same facility, and in 2018, three prisoners escaped in two separate incidents. DeshGujarat
