Ahmedabad: In a recent incident where traffic cops extorted money from a Delhi man who came to the city for the cricket World Cup final, three policemen have been suspended, and seven Traffic Regulation Brigade (TRB) jawans have been expelled.
The city traffic police allegedly extorted Rs 20,000 from Delhi resident Kanav Manchanda and two others through a UPI transaction after finding a liquor bottle in his car near Nana Chiloda.
Manchanda and his friends were en route to the Narendra Modi Stadium from the airport when they were stopped by the traffic police and TRB jawans. Upon finding the bottle of vodka in Manchanda’s car, the accused initially demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh. After Manchanda explained that he did not have that much money, they settled for Rs 20,000, which he transferred through a UPI transaction to a man named Arun Hadiyal.
The city police initiated an inquiry after a video of Manchanda accusing Gujarat police of corruption went viral. DCP Safin Hasan stated that ACP DS Punadia of the city traffic police is conducting the inquiry, and prima facie, the three traffic cops and seven TRB jawans are involved.
The three cops are identified as Head Constable Mahaveersinh Bahadursinh and Constables Vipul Ramsinh and Tushar Bharatsinh. The TRB Jawans are namely Jayesh Manichandra, Nitesh Bhatt, Prakashsinh Zala, Vijay Parmar, Yuvrajsinh Rathod, Abhishek Kushwah, and Gautam Dhanji.
“The three G Division traffic policemen have been suspended, and the seven TRB jawans expelled from service,” said Hasan, adding that Manchanda has refused to file a complaint in the case. He also mentioned that a team led by K division traffic PI JB Agrawat has been sent to Delhi to facilitate the registration of a complaint.
The money was transferred to the account of Hadiyal, a money exchanger, and an investigation is underway to determine who benefited from the extorted money. DeshGujarat
