GMDC gets environmental clearance for capacity expansion of Surkha Lignite Mine

Ahmedabad: The state-owned Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) announced on Monday that it has received environmental clearance to augment the capacity of its Surkha lignite mine in the state. The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MOEFCC) granted approval for expanding the capacity of Surkha (N) lignite mine from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 5 MTPA.

This expansion not only indicates increased production but also aligns with Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation’s (GMDC) commitment to sustainability and responsible resource utilization, as per the company’s statement. Roopwant Singh, the Managing Director of GMDC, emphasized the significance of the environmental clearance for the Surkha (N) lignite mine capacity expansion, considering its crucial role in the company’s growth and revenue perspective.

The heightened lignite production capacity is expected to drive significant revenue growth for GMDC, contributing to meeting energy needs in Saurashtra and Gujarat and fostering development across various sectors in the state. DeshGujarat
