Mandal Cataract Surgery Crisis: 5 patients lose vision permanently, 5 critical, 2 discharged
January 21, 2024
Ahmedabad: Five out of twenty patients admitted to Civil Hospital in Asarwa have suffered permanent vision loss due to complications arising after undergoing cataract surgery at Ramanand Trust Hospital in Mandal. Meanwhile, the condition of the other five patients remains critical despite intensive treatment.
Apart from these, 10 out of the 20 patients admitted have shown progress, with two being discharged from the hospital after recovering their vision, and eight others demonstrating improvement as their vision gradually returns.
Out of the 29 people who underwent cataract surgery at Mandal’s hospital on January 10, 20 patients were admitted to the M & J Institute Of Ophthalmology in Civil Hospital between January 15 and January 18. Immediate and intensive treatment, including antibiotic drops, injections, and medication, was initiated for all patients at the hospital. Unfortunately, five of these 20 patients developed severe infections, resulting in permanent vision loss. Despite exhaustive efforts, the chances of restoring their vision are minimal, as stated by a senior doctor.
The Gujarat Health and Family Welfare Department had formed a nine-member expert committee to investigate reports of complications in individuals following cataract surgery at a trust-run hospital. DeshGujarat
