Lion and leopard spotted in Diu; collector issues warning

Diu: The Diu Collector issued a notification on Wednesday cautioning tourists in the coastal town about the possible wild animal attacks by lions or leopards.

A week ago, a lion roar was heard in the union territory, and later, a leopard was spotted roaming in the 489-year-old Diu Fort. The Collector, in a public notice, has warned against venturing close to Kevdi, Dangawadi, and Nagoa villages during the evening and night due to the high risk of wild animal attacks in these areas. The district administration has instructed its employees to alert tourists at popular places like Diu Fort, Church, Ghoghla, and Nagoa beaches, among other areas.

The forest department spotted a leopard at Diu Fort on CCTV during the early hours of Tuesday. Last week, a Lion’s roar was heard on the Dangerwadi-Vanakbara road, and its movement was captured on trap cameras near Nagoa village. As a precautionary measure, cage traps have been set up at the fort and in two different villages. The forest department, along with the Gujarat forest department, is working to capture the lion and leopard by increasing patrolling and deploying traps.

It is to be noted that Diu shares the border with Gir Somnath district, known for its lion population. DeshGujarat
