Ahmedabad: Around 2.14 lakh motorists in the city received e-challans (e-memo) for violating traffic rules in 2023, out of which the traffic police filed cases against 1.57 lakhs. However, even after receiving notices from the court, only 9,420 motorists appeared in court and paid the fine. The remaining 1.47 lakh motorists have not responded to the e-memos. Now, a virtual court specially created for traffic e-memos will take further legal action and issue summons to the defaulters.

It is noteworthy that if motorists fail to pay the fine within 90 days of receiving the e-challan, the traffic police sends the case to the virtual court, which then issues summons and takes legal action. E-memos for traffic rule violations are also settled in the Lok Adalat conducted by the Gujarat Legal Service Authority, where cases of motorists who pay fines get resolved.

In another development, the traffic police registered 38 thousand cases of indiscriminate parking, imposing fines totaling Rs. 2.03 crore in 2023. In these instances, fines were collected on the spot by locking and towing the vehicles.
