Ahmedabad Traffic Police to launch drive against wrong-side driving; Offenders to be booked
June 21, 2024
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad city traffic police will be conducting a 10-day drive against vehicles running on the wrong side of the road starting tomorrow. During the drive, motorists driving on the wrong side will not only be penalized, but a police case will also be filed against them, which can lead to jail time.
A wrong-side drive will be conducted by the Ahmedabad city traffic police from tomorrow until June 30. This drive is aimed at addressing the accidents happening in the city. The drive will be organized jointly by the traffic police and local police in different areas of the city. Motorists driving on the wrong side during this drive will be caught and booked under sections 279 and 184 of the Indian Penal Code. The driver will also be arrested for this offense.
JCP (Traffic) said, “An order has been received from the Commissioner of Police stating that many accidents occur due to vehicles coming from the wrong side. Therefore, a 10-day traffic drive will be organized from June 22 to June 31. The main purpose of this drive is to prevent motorists from driving on the wrong side. Normally, action is taken under section 184 against vehicles coming from the wrong side, but during this drive, an FIR will be filed against those drivers under sections 279 as well as 184.”
“The drive will start on the SG Highway and other major roads. After that, the drive will extend to internal roads as well. Drivers will be prosecuted instead of merely being fined,” he further said.
Both the traffic and local police can file an offense against wrong-side drivers. Two spots in each area have been identified where wrong-side driving is prevalent. The campaign will especially focus on areas outside schools. Parents dropping their children off at school should take special care to avoid driving on the wrong side.
Furthermore, the purpose of this drive is to make the public aware of the dangers caused by driving on the wrong side. Traffic police personnel, along with other officials, will be part of this drive. DeshGujarat
