9 Years of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban); 8.55 lakh houses built in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and over the past nine years, a total of 8.52 lakh houses have been constructed in Gujarat under PMAY (Urban) scheme.

In June 2015, Gujarat had set a target to construct 7.64 lakhs housing units under the PMAY (Urban) on the basis of the projected demand. Meanwhile. a total of 9.78 lakh housing units have been approved in the state, with 8.55 lakh homes having been successfully constructed.

For the financial year 2024-25, the government has already allocated ₹1,326.93 crores for the construction of 65,000 new housing units.

Gujarat leads the Indian state in the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) component of PMAY (Urban), with over 6,13,000 beneficiaries availing the interest subsidy benefit on their first home loan.

On a similar note, under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan linked Affordable Rental Housing Complexes Scheme 2020, Surat City made history by becoming the first city to approve a project under Model-01, converting 393 houses in the SUDA area into rental units within a period of just three months. The Affordable Rental Housing Complexes scheme was introduced by the central government to provide affordable rental housing to the urban poor and workers.

On the other hand, the city of Rajkot has been chosen for the Global Housing Technology – India’s Lighthouse Project (LHP). Utilizing the tunnel framework for monolithic concrete construction technology, a total of 1,144 EWS-2 type homes were built, inaugurated by PM Modi in October 2022.

Gujarat Wins 14 Awards in PMAY (Urban)

In 2017, the central government honoured Gujarat with the First prize under the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme. In 2019, Gujarat received six awards for PMAY (Urban), including-

1. Best Policy Initiative,
2. Best Affordable Housing Project on Private Land
3. Best In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project

Additionally, in 2019, under the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) component, three beneficiaries from Gujarat were awarded in the Best House Construction category.

In 2022, Gujarat received seven awards for PMAY (Urban) from the central government, including-
1. Best Performing State for Implementation of Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS),
2. Best Performing State for Implementation of Affordable Rental Housing Complex (ARHC) under Model-01
3. Best Affordable Housing Project (AHP) Under Public-Private Partnership Model (PPP)
4. Best State for Convergence with Other Mission
5. State with Maximum Technical Visits at the Light House Project (LHP) Site
6. Best Performing State-Level Technical Cell (SLTC) Under PMAY (U)
7. Best Performing Municipal Council (Una Municipality)
