Surat gold smuggling case: smugglers paid crores to Pakistanis for tricks to dodge airport scanners
July 13, 2024
Surat: New details are emerging in the Surat gold smuggling case. The main accused Maulvi Abdul Bemat has confessed to the Surat police that he paid Rs 1.5 to 2 crore to Pakistanis for buying tricks for smuggling gold. The tricks allowed liquefied gold to pass through airport scanners without detection.
According to Maulvi’s confession, the Pakistani mafia purchased airport-scanners similar to those in Ahmedabad, Surat, and Mumbai airports. They tested various methods to trick these scanners and sold the successful techniques for crores of rupees. The mafia’s technology could break into scanner systems worldwide, aiding in smuggling gold, diamonds, and currencies like dollars and pounds.
After the gold was liquefied, it wouldn’t show up in scanners or during physical checks. Maulvi mentioned that smugglers were willing to pay any amount to Pakistanis to get the know-how and learn the tricks to smuggle gold, currency, and diamonds. He also added that this was a secure and fool-proof smuggling technique. However, their operation was compromised when someone from within leaked information to the SOG police, as a result of which they were caught.
The Surat SOG arrested Maulvi Abdul Bemat, Firoz Ibrahim, Naeem Saleh, and Umaima Saleh at the Surat airport on 8th July with Rs 70 lakh worth of gold in liquid form. The gold was hidden in a trolley bag brought from Dubai. All four accused have applied for bail, but the government argued that the Customs Act applies, making bail unlikely.
The court ordered the investigating officer to appear on Monday. The hearing of the bail application of accused will continue. DeshGujara
