Gujarat govt revises GMERS MBBS fees

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government today reduced the annual fees for undergraduate medical courses, rolling back the earlier hike by the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS). According to the new decision, the fee in the government quota has been reduced from Rs. 5.50 lakh to Rs. 3.75 lakh, marking an approximately 80% reduction. Similarly, in the management quota, the fee has been decreased from Rs. 17 lakh to Rs. 12 lakh, which amounts to approximately a 62.5% reduction.

The revised fee structure will be applicable from the medical academic year 2024-25 onwards.

GMERS on June 28 had implemented an increase in annual fees for undergraduate medical courses across all 13 colleges in the state. The hike affects state and all-India quota seats, which have risen by 66% from ₹3.3 lakh to ₹5.5 lakh per annum. For management quota seats, fees have surged by 87%, climbing from ₹9.075 lakh to ₹17 lakh. Additionally, fees for NRI quota seats have increased by 13%, from $22,000 to $25,000 per annum.

Reacting to the revisions in the fees, Samarth Bhai Bhatt, State Secretary of A.B.V.P. Gujarat Region, states, “After the fierce agitation of the Student Council, the Gujarat Government has reduced the fee by Rs. 2 lakh. Vidhati Parishad welcomes this decision. This victory belongs to the entire student body. We still urge the government to reconsider the management quota fee. The next decision on the management quota fee issue will be taken after discussions with the students who are involved in the medical field and their parents. DeshGujarat
