WR completes loco trials with Kavach system on Sanjan – Bilimora section in Gujarat
July 23, 2024
Valsad: The Kavach system has been installed in the Sanjan-Bilimora section of the Mumbai Division of Western Railways.
Loco trials, along with various other technical tests, have been conducted on this section. Tests such as SPAD prevention and speed control at PSR were performed during the loco trials.
With this installation, Kavach technology has now been implemented over 112 km out of 207 km of the Virar-Surat section on the Mumbai-New Delhi main line.
Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system developed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in collaboration with three Indian companies. This system aims to enhance railway safety by managing train speeds and helping operators recognize danger signals, ensuring safe operations even in adverse weather conditions. It is a sophisticated electronic system designed to meet Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4) standards.
Kavach functions by automatically applying the train’s brakes if the driver fails to respond promptly. It uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags installed along tracks and in station yards to determine positions and directions. When activated, it causes trains within a 5-km radius to halt, ensuring the safe passage of nearby trains.
The system also features centralized live monitoring of train movements through the Network Monitor System. Notably, Kavach is one of the most cost-effective SIL-4 certified technologies, with an error probability of just 1 in 10,000 years. DeshGujarat
