Gujarat ranks 7th in outstanding liabilities among Indian states

Delhi: Gujarat ranks 7th among Indian states in terms of total outstanding liabilities, which have reached ₹4,67,464.40 crore as of 2024. Gujarat has seen a consistent rise in its fiscal liabilities over recent years. In March 2022, the state’s liabilities were ₹3,88,582.80 crore. This increased to ₹4,21,018.20 crore by March 2023 and is projected to reach ₹4,67,464.40 crore by March 2024.

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s report ‘State Finances: A Study of Budgets of 2023-24,’ the table below details the total outstanding liabilities of state governments for March 2022, March 2023 (RE), and March 2024 (BE):

The state’s adherence to the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act ensures that such liabilities are monitored and managed in line with constitutional requirements.
