Delhi HC orders removal of defamatory posts on Amul from all social media platforms

Anand: Weeks after ordering the removal of defamatory social media posts made by a woman about Amul Ice Cream, the Delhi High Court has now issued a further directive stating that the defamatory content must be removed from all social media platforms, including X, YouTube, and Meta.

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora issued the order on July 24 after hearing arguments from lawyers representing the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (AmulFed) and certain social media platforms.

The controversy began in June when Deepa Devi, a Noida resident, posted on social media, claiming she found a centipede in a tub of Amul vanilla ice cream purchased from Blinkit. In an interim order last month, the Delhi HC directed the Noida resident to delete the posts.

The HC ordered that the video and posts, or any part of them, must be deleted from the respective platforms within 36 hours. The court noted that the URLs of the relevant posts had already been provided to the counsels for the social media platforms, including X, YouTube, and Meta.

The order states, “If any other posts containing such video or content are found uploaded by Amul, the company shall notify the social media platforms in writing, and the respective URLs must be removed within 36 hours.” It further mentions that if the request to take down URLs cannot be fulfilled, the social media platforms must communicate this in writing within 48 hours to allow Amul to pursue legal remedies.
