Over 48k students shift from private to SMC run schools in last 5 years

Surat: With the increase in facilities in government-run schools, the city has been witnessing a shift of students from private schools to government schools. In the last five years, around 48,000 students have enrolled in schools run by the Municipal School Board (Nagar Prathmik Shikshan Samiti) after canceling their admissions from private schools.

In 2019-20, 5,814 students shifted from private schools to municipal schools, but this picture has changed in the last three years, with more students moving from private to government schools.

Approximately 1.90 lakh students study in classes 1 to 8 in the schools run by Surat Municipal Corporation’s school board. The number of private school students admitted to education committee schools was 5,814 in the year 2019-20. This number rose to 7,051 students in 2020-21, 13,673 students in 2021-22, 8,971 students in 2022-23, and 12,369 students in the last year, 2023-24. With the admission of 48,778 students in five years, this number is likely to increase this year as well.
