Surat Metro project crane collapses on bungalow; no casualties

Surat: A hydraulic launcher crane involved in the ongoing Surat Metro train project collapsed today in the Nana Varachha area of the city.

The incident occurred this evening in the Chikuwadi area when the crane, while hoisting a span onto a metro corridor pillar, twisted and collapsed onto a nearby bungalow. As the crane fell, some trees and cars parked nearby were also damaged. However, at the time of the collapse, the building was locked and unoccupied, and no casualties occurred during the incident.

An eyewitness, Sandeep Patel, mentioned that the crane’s balance was disrupted during the installation of the pillar. “As the crane band twisted, the pillar fell, causing the crane to collapse onto the building. We checked the house behind, but it was locked and unoccupied. There was damage to the cars below, but no additional casualties were reported.”

A fire officer confirmed that they received a call from the fire control center about an accident during the metro construction operation near Nana Varachha. “We dispatched fire station vehicles immediately. Upon arrival, we assessed the situation and found that one crane had twisted while lifting, causing a load shift to the other crane. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, but the driver jumped out in panic during the incident and sustained minor injuries. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.”

A video of the accident, showing the crane toppling over and landing on a nearby building, has gone viral on social media. DeshGujarat
