Red alert in several districts of Gujarat till August 28th; IMD forecasts extremely heavy rains

Gandhinagar: The monsoon was vigorous over Gujarat on Sunday, and with the deep depression lying about 60 km south-southeast of Udaipur (East Rajasthan), 180 km east of Deesa (Gujarat), and 180 km northeast of Ahmedabad (Gujarat), heavy downpours are likely to continue over the next 2-3 days.

The Indian Meteorological Department, in its latest bulletin, has issued a red alert for several districts of Gujarat over the next three days, until August 28th, with an orange alert to follow until August 30th.

During the next 24 hours, a red alert is in place in Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Ahmedabad, Aravalli, Kheda, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Dang, Tapi, Surat, Narmada, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Dwarka, Botad, and Kutch, where heavy to very heavy rains with isolated extremely heavy falls are very likely.

In addition, Patan, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Porbandar, and Gir Somnath have been put on orange alert for the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rains.

On August 27th, the red alert will be in place for Panchmahal, Dahod, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Surendranagar, Morbi, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagadh, Rajkot, and Kutch. Meanwhile, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Anand, Mahisagar, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Amreli, and Gir Somnath are on orange alert.

On August 28th, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Junagadh, Dwarka, and Kutch are under red alert as they are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rains at a few places, with isolated extremely heavy falls. Kheda, Anand, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Morbi will be under orange alert.

On August 29th, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Porbandar, and Kutch are on orange alert, and on August 30th, only Dwarka and Kutch are under orange alert.

The IMD has also stated that strong surface winds, reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph, are very likely over Gujarat state, along and off Gujarat, and the adjoining northeast Arabian Sea during August 26th to 28th.

Squally winds, reaching speeds of 55-65 kmph and gusting to 75 kmph, are likely to prevail along and off Gujarat and the adjoining northeast Arabian Sea on August 29th.
