Daman: The Khadi Mahotsav, organized by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Daman, kicked off on its campus as per the Ministry of Textiles’ directives. The event brings together renowned artisans and weavers from across Gujarat to showcase the state’s vibrant handloom heritage.

One such participating village is Limbdi from the Surendranagar district, where the art of handloom weaving has been passed down through generations. Artisans like Makwana Jayanti Bhai and Bhavan Bhai, belonging to families that have been weaving for 5-6 generations, share their experiences.

According to the artisans, the village has around 250 families involved in handloom weaving, with 7-8 people from each family working on looms. They source the cotton exclusively from Gujarat, ensuring the authenticity of their products and reducing the carbon footprint.

Defying conventional wisdom that traditional professions are losing appeal, the younger generation is taking a keen interest in handloom weaving. “Trends may change, but once a design is appreciated, it continues to be in demand,” says NIFT Director Sandeep Sachan, who adds that the flexibility and creative freedom of this profession attract the new generation.

The Gujarat government’s initiatives and exhibitions have significantly contributed to the growth of the Khadi industry, and they acknowledge that government support is instrumental in promoting the craft.
