GCCI seeks streamlined GST registration with state-wide biometric verification

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has called for a standardized operating procedure (SOP) for new GST registrations to streamline the process and enhance ease of doing business.

In a recent representation to state and central GST authorities, GCCI highlighted that officers often request documents that businesses find difficult to provide. It urged the authorities to issue a clear list of required documents for GST registration. Additionally, GCCI emphasized the need to enable biometric verification from any state to avoid requiring applicants to travel to Gujarat solely for this process.

Deep Thakkar, a chartered accountant and co-chairman of GCCI’s indirect tax committee, noted that biometric authentication is currently implemented in thirteen states. Applicants from other states seeking GST registration in Gujarat must attend a biometric session, which necessitates traveling to the state.

GCCI proposed that as biometric authentication is rolled out across India in phases, states should coordinate and share data in real time. This would allow applicants to complete biometric verification at their local GST seva kendra instead of traveling to Gujarat. DeshGujarat
