This was the seventh skin donation received by the Civil Hospital Skin Bank, and it was the second one collected from a home.

The state government is continuously expanding the services at Civil Hospital, and the hospital’s staff remains dedicated to ensuring that patients receive the best care.

Dr. Jayesh Sachdev, Head of the Plastic Surgery Department at Civil Hospital, shared some important detail about the skin donations:

Who can donate skin:

  • Those above 18 years of age.
  • Within 6 hours of death.
  • If the person had consented to donate their skin.

Who cannot donate skin:

  • If more than 6 hours have passed since death.
  • If the death was caused by an infection, hepatitis, HIV, or skin cancer.

Where to contact for skin donation at Civil Hospital: The Skin Bank at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, can be contacted at the number 9428265875, which operates 24/7.

By calling the above number, the Plastic Surgery team will come to any hospital or home in Ahmedabad or Gandhinagar to collect the skin.

Skin from brain-dead or naturally deceased individuals can be donated.

How is the skin collected? The skin is taken from the back of the legs and other parts of the body. The skin is removed carefully without causing blood loss or damage to the body. After collection, the area is dressed. The process takes about 45 minutes (approximately).

The skin is then processed and preserved at the Skin Bank for use in treating burn victims or individuals who have lost skin in accidents.

The skin stays on the recipient’s body for about two to three weeks before naturally sloughing off. During this time, the recipient may receive home care or may have their own skin grafted onto the affected area.

By pledging to donate skin along with other organs, lives can be saved. DeshGujarat
