Police complaint likely over release of water from Orsang check dam
January 06, 2025
Chhota Udepur: Water crisis threatens Chhota Udepur as the plate of the Orsang check dam was removed, causing thousands of gallons of water to flow into the river. This incident has raised concerns about the town’s water supply in the upcoming summer months.
The Orsang check dam was constructed at a cost of Rs. 7 crore to ensure a steady water supply for the town, especially during the scorching summers. After the monsoon season, the dam gates are closed with plates to retain water throughout the year. However, the recent removal of the plate has significantly reduced the water level, jeopardizing the town’s water security.
This incident has also impacted farmers along the Orsang river. The sudden release of water flooded their fields, causing an estimated loss of Rs. 30 lakh for farmers cultivating watermelons, muskmelons, and vegetables.
The Chhota Udepur municipality has decided to file a police complaint against the unknown individuals responsible for removing the dam plate. The municipality is also facing the prospect of financial losses due to the need to procure water from Hafeshwar sooner than usual, adding to the financial burden. DeshGujarat
