100 days Desilting work for Vishwamitri River project to begin after Uttarayan

Vadodara: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) began work on the long-awaited Vishwamitri River Project last week. Under this project, the first phase of work will commence after the Uttarayan festival, which falls on January 14th.

Dharmik Dave, HOD of the Vishwamitri Project, said, “Following the devastating floods in 2024, a Flood Control Committee led by BN Navalawala submitted a report after two months of various studies. As per the report, one of the tasks is desilting (the removal of sediment and silt to restore its natural capacity). This work is estimated to be completed at a cost of around Rs. 60 crore.”

The initiative aims to reduce floods in the river and increase its carrying capacity.

“As of now, the work will be done inside the riverbed of Vishwamitri and is targeted for completion in 100 days. Every day, around 40 Poclain machines, over 75 JCB machines, and over 250 Hyva machines will be in operation. Cranes will also be present at the location as safety measures,” Dave further stated.

“No harm will be caused to crocodiles and tortoises, which are Schedule 1 animals under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 during the work. However, as per the orders of the municipal commissioner, provisions have been made to house over 150 such animals at Sayaji Baug Zoo and Ajwa Reservoir,” he added.

The government has allocated over Rs. 1,200 crore for various works related to the Vishwamitri River project, and this is one of many such initiatives. Approximately 15 lakh cubic meters of sediment and debris are set to be excavated from the river. Seven locations have been identified to dispose of this debris generated from the project. DeshGujarat
