February 06, 2025
Ahmedabad: In a bid to tackle the increasing transportation demands of citizens and keep pace with the city’s expansion, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has proposed the development of a Light Railway Transport (LRT) system in its Draft Budget for the financial year 2025-26, which was presented today.
In the draft budget, the AMC states, “To address the increasing transportation needs of citizens in view of the development taking place in Ahmedabad city and surrounding areas, a feasibility survey is planned to develop LRT (Light Railway Transport) as a capable, good, fast, and pollution-free electric mode of transport in the coming times, along with Metro, BRTS bus, and AMTS bus services. As a high mobility corridor in a circular route, this LRT will connect SP Ring Road, SG Highway, and other areas with high vehicular traffic, as well as BRTS terminus stations.”
The AMC draft budget has proposed four corridors for the LRT, which are the Delhi Darwaja to Jaspur route of 20.5 km, an 18 km route from Riverfront West (Ellisbridge) to Shantipura, a 14 km route from Navrangpura Circle (Riverfront West) to Supercity Circle (Santej), and the Civil Hospital to Narol Circle route of 22 km.
