Gujarat targets 37,350 MW renewable energy generation by 2026
March 11, 2025
Gandhinagar: The total installed power capacity in Gujarat as of October 2024 is 51,869 MW, up from 48,914 MW on March 31, 2024. On March 31, 2023, the power capacity stood at 42,719 MW. Meaning that the installed power capacity in the state has increased by 9,150 MW in one and a half years, reflecting Gujarat’s significant progress in the energy sector.
The state government has now placed emphasis on solar and wind energy. By 2026, solar, wind, and solar-wind hybrid power projects with a total capacity of 37,350 MW will be implemented with an investment of ₹1.50 lakh crore. Gujarat Power Corporation Limited has been appointed as the nodal agency for this initiative.
For this, the state government has allotted 74,700 hectares of land in Khawda, Kutch district, to six developer companies. According to the Economic Survey presented in the Gujarat Assembly, these companies are expected to generate 37,350 MW of electricity by December 2026.
Notably, as of March 31, 2024, solar power plants in the state generated 13,545 MW of electricity, including 3,456 MW from rooftop solar installations. By October 31, 2024, solar power generation had increased to 15,593 MW, with rooftop solar contributing 4,488 MW. In 2023-24, the state generated 1,49,094 million units of electricity, while in the first six months of the current financial year (2024-25), power generation reached 93,067 MW.
Inspired by the success of Charanka Solar Park, the first multi-developer and multi-beneficiary model introduced in 2010, Gujarat is now developing the world’s largest renewable power park with a capacity of 37.35 GW. This park will integrate solar power, wind power, and solar-wind hybrid projects.
Meanwhile, a 700 MW Ultra Mega Solar Power Project (UMSPP) has been approved on 1,392 hectares in Radhanesda, Vav taluka, and work has been completed for 2024-25. Additionally, a 1,000 MW Ultra Mega Solar Power Project (UMSPP) has been approved on 9,800 hectares in Dholera, of which 300 MW has been operational since 2022. The plan is to operationalize another 700 MW by 2024-25. Dehsgujarat
