Ahmedabad: In the run-up to securing the spot for hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics, the urban development department of the Gujarat government is preparing a large-scale infrastructure revamp for Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. According to a recent high-level coordination committee meeting, a massive financial roadmap for hosting the global sporting event has been revealed. The non-Organising Committee for Olympic Games (OCOG) budget—which excludes direct operational costs—is estimated to range between ₹16,060 crore and ₹22,878 crore.
The funding, which will be generated from multiple sources, including government grants and corporate sponsorships, will be used to modernize existing sports complexes, build new arenas, and enhance connectivity.
A major portion, between ₹11,020 crore and ₹15,558 crore, will be allocated for upgrading sports infrastructure across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, according to the report Review Meeting – Preparedness towards Amdavad 2036. Notably, IIT Gandhinagar’s facilities will undergo renovations worth ₹2,190 crore to ₹3,300 crore, while the redevelopment of sites like the rifle club shooting range and allied facilities is expected to cost ₹3,456 crore to ₹4,914 crore.
Furthermore, a master plan is being developed to create world-class sports infrastructure. This includes the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, Olympic Village, and other facilities spanning approximately 650 acres near the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera. As part of this expansion, authorities plan to acquire land from three ashrams, including that of rape-convict Asaram Bapu. DeshGujarat
