Gandhinagar: The Sabarmati Riverfront, one of Ahmedabad’s most iconic attractions, is now being extended to the state capital, Gandhinagar. The riverfront development is being carried out in multiple phases, and in a significant development, groundwork has begun on Phase 6, which spans from GIFT City to Sant Sarovar.
Though an official announcement is yet to be made, construction activity is visible on the northern side of the bridge connecting PDEU and GIFT City. The current work includes building a diaphragm and retaining wall along a 1.5-km stretch near GIFT City.
It is learned that the state’s irrigation department is executing this phase, with Singapore-based consultancy Surbana Jurong—owned by Temasek, Singapore’s sovereign investment company—tasked with developing the upcoming stages of the project.
Once completed, the Sabarmati Riverfront will stretch 38 km from the Vasna Barrage in Ahmedabad to the thermal power station near Gandhinagar. The project comprises seven phases. Phase 1, covering 11.2 km, was inaugurated in 2009, while Phase 2, adding another 5.5 km up to Indira Bridge, is currently underway. Both phases were designed by HCP Design Planning and Management Pvt Ltd, led by architect Bimal Patel.
Phase 3, covering 4.5 km from Indira Bridge to the Narmada Canal, will begin soon following environmental clearance. The phase is estimated to cost ₹1,000 crore and is being designed by Bengaluru-based Sobha Consultants. Tendering is currently in progress.
Phases 4 to 7 will cover a 16.5-km stretch from the Narmada Main Canal to the Chiloda Bridge near Gandhinagar’s thermal power station. Phase 4 will span 4.5 km from the Narmada Canal to the PDEU Bridge; Phase 5 will cover 4.9 km from PDEU to GIFT City; Phase 6, the shortest, spans 1.6 km from GIFT City to Sant Sarovar Barrage; and Phase 7 will extend 6 km to the power station. Surbana Jurong will oversee these later phases, with a total projected cost of ₹3,300 crore. The ongoing work near GIFT City falls under Phase 6. DeshGujarat
