Lion census in Gujarat from May 10–13; AI to assist in process

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Forest Minister Mulubhai Bera has announced that for the first time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be used in the lion census to be conducted in the state. The Forest Department is fully prepared for the count, which will be held from May 10 to 13 across 11 districts. Alongside forest officials, volunteers and NGOs will also participate in this crucial exercise.

Mulubhai Bera told the media, “The census will take place in Gir Sanctuary and other sanctuaries across 11 districts where lion movement and habitat are present. Every time we conduct the census, many volunteers come here. Such people will join along with Forest Department staff, and the census will take place smoothly. AI (Artificial Intelligence) and technology will be used to carry out the process.”

Traditionally held every five years, the lion census is now taking place nearly after a decade due to the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting the schedule in 2020. This year, the process gains added significance and will be carried out in two 24-hour phases, according to forest officials.

Whenever one hears about Asiatic lions, Gir forest naturally comes to mind. Known as the pride of Gujarat, the region attracts lakhs of tourists from across the country and abroad. The last official census in 2020 recorded 674 lions. Since then, the lion population has reportedly increased, and this upcoming census will provide updated figures. DeshGujarat
