Power demand in Gujarat hits 25,000 MW mark amid soaring temperatures
April 11, 2025
Ahmedabad: With Gujarat reeling under intense heat, the state’s electricity demand has seen a significant spike. In just the first 10 days of April, power demand has surpassed 25,000 megawatts (MW), nearing last year’s peak levels.
As per reports, Gujarat’s highest electricity demand in 2024 was around 25,500 MW, recorded in June. That benchmark is now close to being overtaken, with April already witnessing a maximum demand of 25,321 MW on Tuesday—marking the highest on record so far. The previous day, Monday, saw a similarly high demand of 25,283 MW. If the heatwave persists, projections indicate demand could soar to 26,500 MW by the end of April.
A comparison of data shows a sharp rise in demand between March and April. For five of the first nine days of April, daily power demand exceeded that of March by over 2,000 MW. For instance, while March 5 saw a peak of 20,457 MW, April 5 recorded 24,260 MW.
Last year in April, the peak power demand was around 23,000 MW. This continued rise can be attributed to the steadily rising temperatures. DeshGujarat
