No lift or escalators on Platform 12 of Ahmedabad Railway Station troubles senior citizens
April 15, 2025
Ahmedabad: The Indian Railways is carrying out the redevelopment of Kalupur Railway Station, which is slated for completion by 2027, along with the construction of a Bullet Train station at the site. However, despite these major infrastructure projects underway, the lack of basic facilities at Platform No. 12 has become a serious inconvenience for senior citizens.
Many elderly commuters, especially those opting for the Ahmedabad Metro to avoid traffic and heat, are finding it difficult to access the railway station from Platform 12. The platform, which directly connects to the Metro station, lacks a lift or escalator, making it particularly challenging for those with limited mobility.
While other platforms have lift or escalator access, Platform 12 has no such facility, leaving elderly and physically challenged passengers struggling.
Activists and passengers have urged the railway authorities to implement a temporary solution rather than waiting until the full redevelopment is completed in 2027.
Railway officials have assured that the ongoing redevelopment will include modern amenities such as lifts, escalators, and foot overbridges to ease passenger movement. “We are aware of the current difficulties and are exploring interim solutions to support senior citizens and passengers with mobility issues,” said a senior official from Western Railway’s Ahmedabad Division.
