Rajkot: Ribada village in Gondal has been rocked by the suicide of Amit Khunt, a rape accused who was reportedly a supporter of former MLA Jayrajsinh Jadeja.

On May 3, a 17-year-old girl working in the modeling field in Rajkot filed a rape complaint against Khunt. Subsequently, on May 5, 2025, Khunt died by suicide by hanging himself near his farm on Lodhika Road.

The deceased, Amit Damjibhai Khunt (32), named Anirudhsinh Jadeja and his son Rajdipsinh—both residents of Ribada—in a four-page suicide note, accusing them of mental harassment. He had been absconding since the rape complaint was registered at Rajkot’s ‘A’ Division Police Station.

The suicide note reportedly mentions that Amit was under intense pressure from Anirudhsinh and Rajdipsinh. Based on this note, the Gondal police have registered a case against the duo and two others.

Amit, a native of Ribada village, was married and had a nine-year-old son. He was engaged in farming and had been living with his family in Rajkot following a prior dispute in Ribada. After the postmortem was conducted at Rajkot Civil Hospital, his family initially refused to accept the body, demanding action against the accused. The body was kept in cold storage as tensions escalated in the village.

However, on May 6, following assurances from senior officials—including the District Police Chief—that no one named in the complaint would be spared, the family and community leaders accepted the body. Amit’s funeral procession took place in Ribada village at around 4:30 PM under tight police security, with a large number of Patidar community members in attendance.

Meanwhile, Anirudhsinh Jadeja released a video statement accusing former MLA Jayrajsinh Jadeja of conspiring to frame him and his son. He denied knowing the minor girl and claimed the suicide note was scripted at Jayrajsinh’s behest. He pointed out alleged inconsistencies in the handwriting and content of the note, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated and vowing to seek legal recourse.

In his complaint, Amit’s brother Manish alleged that Anirudhsinh and Rajdipsinh had attacked Amit during the last Assembly elections. He also stated that Amit had sought to revoke Anirudhsinh’s sentence remission in the Popatbhai Sorathiya murder case, which may have caused further enmity. Manish further alleged that the girl and a woman named Pooja Rajgor, who filed the rape complaint, were part of a pre-planned honeytrap aimed at defaming and mentally torturing Amit.

The Gondal Police have registered the complaint and initiated further investigation. DeshGujarat
