Unseasonal rain cools Gujarat: Ahmedabad, Baroda, Bhavnagar see sharp dips in maximum temperature
May 08, 2025
Ahmedabad: A major drop in maximum temperatures was recorded across several parts of Gujarat on Wednesday. Widespread rainfall and cloudy skies contributed to this rare early-May cool spell, with cities like Ahmedabad, Baroda, and Bhavnagar witnessing temperature deviations of more than 10°C below normal.
According to the weather report issued this morning by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ahmedabad recorded a maximum temperature of just 26.9°C, a staggering 14.6°C below normal, accompanied by 12 mm of rainfall. Similarly, Baroda experienced 26.4°C, 13.9°C below normal, along with 22 mm of rain. Bhavnagar was also unusually cool at 28.2°C, 11.1°C below the seasonal average, and received 32 mm of rainfall. These readings mark some of the lowest maximum temperatures for the month of May in recent years.
In Rajkot where the mercury had crossed 46°C, earlier this season, the maximum settled at 35.7°C on Wednesday, 5.6°C below normal, while Amreli recorded 34.4°C, 6.9°C below normal. Coastal areas like Veraval and Porbandar were relatively less affected but still reported light rain and marginal temperature drops.
Bhuj reported a maximum of 39.0°C, only 0.7°C below normal, while Okha and Naliya recorded slightly above-normal temperatures at 35.2°C and 35.0°C respectively.
This fall in mercury is attributed to a low-pressure system and increased moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea. While the spell has brought temporary relief from the heat, the IMD advises caution due to the possibility of localized thunderstorms and fluctuating weather patterns in the coming days. DeshGujarat
