Surat Metro Work Triggers Commuter Woes as Varachha Main Road Partially Shut After Lambe Hanuman Road Closure
May 14, 2025
Surat: Ongoing metro railway construction across Surat continues to test the patience of its residents, with multiple road closures causing significant disruptions to daily life and commutes. The latest flashpoint is the partial closure of Varachha Main Road, compounding the existing travel difficulties for locals already grappling with the long-term shutdown of sections of Lambe Hanuman Road. Citizens have voiced their grievances, prompting an intervention from Mayor Dakshesh Mavani.
For the past month, a segment of Varachha Main Road, stretching from Varachha Police Station to Yes Plaza, has been cordoned off due to excavation work reportedly undertaken by the metro construction authorities near Yes Plaza. This closure has severely impacted local residents and businesses, forcing them onto already congested alternative routes.
This new disruption comes on top of existing major closures on Hanuman Road. The stretch from Labheshwar Police Station to Matawadi Police Station remains completely shut in both directions. Additionally, another section of Hanuman Road, from Vasant Bhikhani Wadi to Sabras Garnala, has been inaccessible for the past three years due to the extensive metro project work.
These cumulative closures have created a bottleneck, forcing a large volume of traffic towards Suryapur Garnala or the Katargam Alkapuri overbridge for those needing to reach the railway station and other key areas. Commuters from Kamrej, Laskana, Kapodra, and Varachha are among the hardest hit, facing longer travel times and daily inconvenience.
The public concern over the Varachha Main Road closure reached Mayor Dakshesh Mavani, who was reportedly quick to respond. Understanding the citizens’ plight, the Mayor is said to have contacted officials from the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), the agency responsible for the metro project, urging them to expedite the work and reopen the affected road as soon as possible to alleviate the hardship faced by the people.
