Gujarat University stirs fresh row over iPad distribution to board members

Ahmedabad: Gujarat University stirred fresh controversy on Thursday after it reportedly distributed high-end iPads to newly appointed board members and directors. The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party, has criticised this move, which comes just after the recent uproar over the VC allegedly handing out cash rewards ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 5 lakh to staff involved in the NAAC inspection.

According to members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the university handed out iPads worth approximately Rs 1.28 lakh each to at least a dozen individuals during recent meetings. NSUI’s Vikram Gohil criticized the move, calling it an unnecessary luxury and a misuse of public funds. NSUI warned that if the iPad decision is not rolled back and a transparent system is not introduced, it would escalate its protest.

Meanwhile, Vice-Chancellor Neerja Gupta stated that the practice of giving iPads began two years ago and that the recent distribution was limited to newly inducted members. However, she added that she was unaware of the exact cost per device, as purchases are handled by the university’s estate department. DeshGujarat
