Ahmedabad: Two weeks after the tragic crash of flight AI 171, one passenger out of the 241 who died onboard the ill-fated aircraft still remains in the morgue of Civil Hospital.
“Relatives are expected to collect the last remaining body soon. So far, 259 individuals have been identified—240 passengers from the flight and 13 ground victims through DNA, while six others were identified through physical or facial features. Just one body remains unclaimed,” said a Civil Hospital official.
On Wednesday, the mortal remains of a UK passenger were repatriated, bringing the total number of bodies handed over to families to 258.
According to state health department sources, no new matches have been made in the past 48 hours. Meanwhile, forensic experts are continuing efforts to extract DNA from the last set of remains, which are severely charred. “Advanced techniques are being used to complete the identification process and bring closure to the victim’s family,” an official said.
