Gujarat govt carries out last rites of mortal remains of 19 Air India crash victims

Ahmedabad: The last rites of all 26 victims of the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash have been completed with full religious respect, following the completion of DNA sample matching of the human remains recovered from the crash site.

During the identification process, the hospital administration had informed the bereaved families that more remains could be identified over time as the matching process progressed. After the final round of testing, the DNA of 26 mortal remains was successfully matched and all families were duly contacted.

Seven families took possession of their relatives’ remains to perform the last rites privately. The remaining families requested the hospital administration to carry out the rites on their behalf. Accordingly, the administration conducted the last rites of 19 victims.

Among them, one Muslim victim was buried with full religious observance, including the recitation of verses from the Quran by a cleric. The last rites of 18 Hindu victims were conducted as per Hindu customs at a designated cremation site, and their ashes were later immersed at Naran Ghat on the Sabarmati River.
