Ahmedabad: Vadodara, Surat, and Ahmedabad have emerged among the top five safest cities in India, according to the latest Numbeo Safety Index. The index, which reflects residents’ perceptions of safety, places Mangalore at the top with a safety score of 74.2 and an international ranking of 49.

Vadodara follows with a score of 69.2, securing the second spot nationwide while ranking 86th among 390 cities globally. Ahmedabad stands as the third safest city in the country with a score of 68.2, placing 94th worldwide. Ranked 106th internationally, Surat is the fourth safest city in India with a score of 66.6, and Jaipur completes the top five with 65.2.

Other cities featured in the top ten include Navi Mumbai (63.5), Thiruvananthapuram (61.1), Chennai (60.3), Pune (58.7), and Chandigarh (57.4).

The Numbeo Safety Index is widely referenced to compare safety perceptions in cities worldwide. Abu Dhabi in the UAE emerged as the safest city in the world this year, followed by Ajman, another city in the UAE.

Furthermore, India as a country has also performed well, ranking 61st overall — safer than the United States and the United Kingdom, which ranked 91st and 86th respectively. Nations such as the UAE, Andorra, and Qatar topped the charts with high safety scores.

City-wise, only one city in the United States,  Irvine, CA, was rated safer than Vadodara. Vadodara itself emerged as a haven when compared to cities in the United Kingdom.

This year’s ranking highlights the growing sense of security felt by residents in Gujarat’s major cities, reinforcing their reputation as some of the safest urban centers in the country.

A few reasons can be pointed out for why Gujarat cities are emerging as the safest in the country. One major factor contributing to this safety and disciplined lifestyle is the prohibition of liquor in the state. Interestingly, Gujarat has also long been known as a safe place for women, especially during Navratri, when women participate in garba and return home late at night without fear. Vadodara, known as the Garba capital of Gujarat, has emerged as the safest city in the state, showing that women feel secure here.
