Couple Dies of Electrocution on Road in Ahmedabad: Victim’s Mother Files Complaint Against AMC Officials
September 13, 2025
Ahmedabad: The mother of a deceased man who, along with his wife, died after being electrocuted by a live wire in Narol has filed a police complaint against five Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials, holding them responsible for the tragedy.
The victims, Rajan Singhal and his wife Ankita, residents of Rudra Green Residency near Narol police station, were returning home on a two-wheeler on December 8 when they were electrocuted on a flooded stretch of Mutton Gali, Narol. Rajan allegedly swerved to avoid a pothole when their vehicle came in contact with electrified water.
In her complaint filed at Narol police station, Hetalben Singhal (55), Rajan’s mother, alleged that despite being responsible for maintaining streetlight infrastructure, the officials failed to insulate or repair live wires after removing light poles from the road near Ramdev Estate. With heavy rainwater accumulation, the exposed wires created a fatal hazard.
Calling the deaths of her son and daughter-in-law “not an accident but the result of blatant negligence,” Hetalben named five AMC officials in her FIR:
-
Zahir Saiyad, in charge of streetlight maintenance
-
Nayan Kapadiya and Ajay Parmar, engineers responsible for repairs
-
Jignesh Gamit, technical supervisor for electrical safety
-
Pankaj Machhaar, assistant engineer tasked with supervision and protocol compliance
Narol police have registered the FIR under Section 106(1) (death by negligence) and Section 54 (abetment) of the IPC. Inspector P.C. Desai confirmed that one accused has been detained.
According to police, preliminary investigations show that two streetlight poles had been removed from the stretch, but the wiring was left exposed and unrepaired. Rainwater filled the road, causing the live current to spread through the water, electrocuting the couple.
The couple had reportedly been on their way back from L.G. Hospital, where they had delivered food to Rajan’s ailing father, who is under treatment for a lung infection.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who allege that civic negligence and poor supervision led to the deaths. The investigation into AMC’s role and the contractor’s responsibility is ongoing. DeshGujarat
