Row Over Funeral Expenses of Former CM Vijay Rupani in Rajkot
September 14, 2025
Rajkot: A controversy has surfaced over the expenses incurred during the funeral of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijaybhai Rupani in Rajkot, who died in a plane crash. While the funeral and related arrangements in Rajkot cost over ₹20 lakh, local BJP leaders have reportedly distanced themselves from the bills, leaving the family of the late leader to bear the expenses.
The funeral procession in Rupani’s hometown Rajkot saw a massive turnout, with arrangements including a huge dome, flowers, and other facilities. It was initially believed that the local BJP would bear the costs. However, when contractors approached the party office with bills, they were informed that the Rupani family would be responsible for the payment. The family realized this when those seeking payment turned to them.
The party, however, did organize tribute programs in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, where regional and ruling party leaders bore full responsibility.
City BJP President Madhav Dave dismissed speculation about the issue, stating: “The party has done everything it was supposed to do, and the family has also done everything they were supposed to do. This issue is not up for discussion. No one from our side has been sent to his family regarding the bill.”
While the BJP’s central leadership had extended condolences soon after Rupani’s death, the row over funeral bills has raised questions locally, with signs of displeasure within the party’s Rajkot unit. As disciplined and dignified persons, the family members have stayed mum over this row, but the things have come to light through partymen close to them. DeshGujarat
