Ahmedabad to get ₹4.4 crore sponge park
September 26, 2025
Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to construct a sponge park (lake) in the open space near Pramukh Bungalows in New Ranip area, Ranip Ward, covering an area of 3,515 sq.m.
The land for the project, previously a dilapidated water body, was handed over to AMC specifically for lake development. Once completed, the sponge park will enhance the beauty of the Sadar area and provide recreational facilities for residents. The project also aims to recharge the lake and improve groundwater levels in the vicinity.
The project has been awarded to KB Builders at a tender amount of ₹4.42 crore, which is approximately 3.33% lower than the estimated cost of ₹5.64 crore. The work includes civil construction, electrical work, and landscaping.
Additionally, plans are underway to construct a mini sports complex near the lake, further boosting amenities for local residents and promoting community well-being.
What Are Sponge Parks:
Drawing inspiration from successful projects in Chennai and China’s “sponge cities,” sponge parks are designed to absorb, filter, and retain rainwater, supporting the city’s stormwater management strategy. Unlike traditional parks, sponge parks incorporate permeable surfaces, rain gardens, and drought-resistant native plants. During heavy rainfall, they absorb excess water, reducing urban flood risks, while in summer, they release moisture, creating cooler areas and recharging groundwater. DeshGujarat
