Gandhinagar Makes Pet Dog Registration Mandatory After Committee Approval

Gandhinagar | Registration of pet dogs has now been made mandatory in Gandhinagar, following the approval of a new set of rules by the Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee. The resolution, prepared in line with government guidelines under initiatives such as Rabies-Free City and Animal Birth Control, was presented in the committee meeting held today under the chairmanship of Gaurang Vyas and received a green signal.

Officials said incidents of pet dog bites in Ahmedabad prompted the Corporation to tighten regulations to prevent similar occurrences in Gandhinagar. Registration of pet dogs had already begun on July 1, 2025, but the formal rules required committee approval before implementation. With today’s decision, the corporation will now start enforcing the provisions.

A total of 14 rules have been framed, placing clear responsibility on dog owners. During registration, owners must submit the dog’s vaccination certificate, photographs of the dog and owner, the owner’s Aadhaar card and a registration fee of ₹200. The rules also make it compulsory for owners to ensure proper nutrition and care for their pets, failing which action may be taken under the Quality of Animal Act.

The Corporation has further stated that if a pet dog harms residents or pedestrians, the owner will be held fully responsible. Children below the age of 18 will not be permitted to take pet dogs outside the home, and owners will also be accountable in cases where their dogs defecate or cause nuisance in public areas.
