No entry for heavy vehicles on 16 bridges in Ahmedabad
December 13, 2025
UPDATE: The decision has been shelved for now and its implementation is suspended
Ahmedabad: In response to growing safety concerns over the city’s ageing bridges, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has launched a major safety initiative. Height-restriction barriers are being installed on 16 bridges in the city to block heavy vehicles, following two recent incidents: the collapse of the Gambhira Bridge in July 2025 and a structural defect found at Subhash Bridge this month.
Foundation testing is currently underway at Subhash Bridge, and load-limit signage is being placed on all older bridges. Work has already begun on Gandhi Bridge, connecting Income Tax Crossroads and Shahpur, where height barriers are being fitted at both ends. The AMC has sanctioned a Rs 2.89 crore tender to implement these measures.
The AMC is installing height-restriction barriers on older river bridges, railway overbridges, and flyovers to prevent heavy vehicles from straining ageing structures. The list includes Kalupur Railway Overbridge (1875), Old Sardar Patel Bridge (1940), Old Mahatma Gandhi Bridge (1942), Nehru Bridge (1962), Parikshitlal Majumdar Bridge (1968), Subhash Bridge (1973), Girdharnagar Bridge (1985), Ambedkar Bridge (1990), Chimanbhai Patel Railway Overbridge (1994), Cadila Railway Overbridge (1996), Nathalal Jaghda Railway Overbridge (1998), New Sardar Patel Bridge (2000), and Chandlodia Railway Overbridge (2000), among others.
This comprehensive safety drive aims to prevent further accidents and ensure the structural stability of Ahmedabad’s historic bridges. DeshGujarat
