AMC to replace wooden biers with stainless steel in crematoriums
January 08, 2026
Ahmedabad: In a key environment-friendly decision, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to replace traditional wooden and bamboo biers used at crematoriums with durable stainless steel biers. The decision was announced by Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani after the Standing Committee meeting held on Thursday.
Addressing the media, Dani said the move aims to reduce the cutting of wood and promote environmental conservation. He stated that stainless steel biers are long-lasting and eco-friendly. In the coming period, stainless steel biers will be installed at all AMC crematoriums where bier registrations are carried out, leading to significant savings of bamboo and wood.
Several other important decisions related to environment, fire safety, and public health were also taken at the meeting. The Standing Committee approved a plan to establish a fire station every 10 km in Ahmedabad, with approval granted for three new fire stations. AMC also decided to form a new ‘E-Governance / Electric and Material Procurement Committee’ to streamline procurement processes.
In another major public health measure, AMC made it mandatory to install chlorine dosing systems at water distribution centres. Chlorination has also been made compulsory for loose water suppliers, and strict action, including sealing, will be taken against those who fail to comply. DeshGujarat
