Gandhinagar: In a significant boost to industrial growth and the “Make in India, Made for the World” vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Gujarat government has taken another concrete step with Maruti Suzuki India Limited announcing a massive investment of ₹35,000 crore to set up a new automobile manufacturing plant at Khoraj.
An investment letter handover ceremony between the Gujarat government and Maruti Suzuki India Limited was held in Gandhinagar in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Maruti Suzuki Managing Director Hitachi Takeuchi. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi, along with Maruti Suzuki Whole-Time Director and Executive Committee Member Sunil Kakkar, were also present on the occasion.
Under the project, Maruti Suzuki will develop a new manufacturing facility on 1,750 acres of land allotted by the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) in Khoraj. The plant will have four production units, each with a capacity of 2.5 lakh cars per year, taking the total annual production capacity to 10 lakh vehicles. The company plans to begin production from the first unit in the financial year 2029.
The project is expected to generate direct employment for over 12,000 people. In addition, the establishment of ancillary industries, auto components suppliers, and MSME units in the surrounding region is likely to create approximately 7.5 lakh indirect jobs, further strengthening Gujarat’s position as a leading automobile hub in the country.
It is noteworthy that an MoU for this project was signed between the Gujarat government and Maruti Suzuki at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024. The company’s first Gujarat plant, located in Hansalpur, is already operational and currently produces 7.5 lakh vehicles annually, with plans to scale up production to 10 lakh units by 2026–27.
Welcoming the investment, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that the new Maruti Suzuki facility is not just another manufacturing unit but a landmark step toward reinforcing Gujarat’s status as the most competitive automobile manufacturing corridor in India. He also highlighted the strong India-Gujarat-Japan partnership under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and reiterated the state government’s commitment to providing a business-friendly environment.
Patel noted that Gujarat’s success as an industrial powerhouse stems from its policy-driven governance, robust infrastructure, and industry-centric development approach. He assured continued support to Maruti Suzuki and other investors, emphasizing that Gujarat remains a preferred destination for global manufacturing.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi stated that Japan has been a key partner in Gujarat’s development journey since the inception of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, inspired by Prime Minister Modi. He added that the state government would continue to extend the same level of cooperation and facilitation that it provided when Maruti Suzuki first invested in Gujarat.
Hitachi Takeuchi, Managing Director of Maruti Suzuki, appreciated the proactive support of the Gujarat government, saying that the state’s leadership in mobility transformation has been instrumental in the company’s growth. He reaffirmed Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to contributing to the “Make in India” initiative through its expanding manufacturing footprint in Gujarat.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials including Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Das, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries) Mamta Verma, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Sanjeev Kumar, Industries Commissioner P. Swaroop, Additional Principal Secretary Dr. Vikrant Pandey, GIDC Managing Director Praveena D.K., and senior Maruti Suzuki executives Arnab Roy, Manjari Chaudhary, Parikshit Maini, and Jigar Desai, among others.
